In fact when Orvis was founded in 1856 it was to outfit wealthy patrons visiting Manchester Vermont’s famed health spa. These well to do urbanites would visit Manchester to take in the clean mountain air for months at a time, and in the process, developed a love of outdoor pursuits such as walking and fly fishing. Orvis initially provided these people with handcrafted fly rods, and even mailed them to some customers. Their UK operation has gone from strength to strength since they first started in a converted mill in the village of Nether Wallop.
